Life After Death
I documented the final three months of my father's life as he lay dying in hospital, using photography as a coping mechanism. Video and photography is something I learnt from him. After seven years hidden on a hard drive, I finally mustered the courage to confront the images which is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. They became a significant part of the 'We're All Going To Die' festival in 2018, where I showcased them to the public.
To bring the photographs to life, I transformed them into large acrylic boards that measured two meters in width. Illuminating them from behind created a glowing effect. These boards were suspended from trusses by wires, allowing observers to walk through the rows, depicting the gradual decline of my father's health, finishing with photos of his return home where he passed away.
At the end of the exhibition was a recreation of our family lounge room, complete with leather couches, Persian rugs, and an old TV playing family VHS tapes. Visitors could hear my father's voice on the tapes as he captured his family's moments, and browse through a photo album showcasing this great man’s vitality in life.
